We are providing design and procurement management services prior to the award of construction contracts for the $1.5 billion Tema Port Expansion Project for Meridian Port Services (MPS). MPS is the operator of the container terminal at Tema Port. We are also supervising construction of all port expansion facilities. The project commenced at the beginning of October 2016, with completion anticipated by 2019.

MPS is a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Meridian Port Holdings, with Bolloré Transport & Logistics and APM Terminals as the two main shareholders.

MPS is executing the project as part of the GPHA masterplan for the development of Tema Port. The necessary funding for the project had been secured by MPS from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, as well as the Shareholders.

China Harbour Engineering Company is the marine contractor. The project will treble Tema Port’s current traffic of about one million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUS). A dredged 19-metre-deep port access channel, a new 1.4-kilometre-long quay for four container berths, with a 16 metre draft, and a 4-kilometre-long breakwater will enable the expanded Tema Port to accommodate some of the world’s largest container ships, and improve cargo-handling services and capacity. This will enhance the port’s competitiveness as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.

Due to the size and complexity of the project, the AECOM team includes highly-experienced port project management professionals who have come to Tema from across our global organisation. These port specialists will work with AECOM’s local Ghanaian specialists, who are well-qualified in project controls, contract administration, construction management and environmental management. Our multinational staff represents nine nations and five continents.

AECOM has extensive experience in the planning, engineering, and construction oversight of some of the largest port and marine facilities worldwide. Our planners, simulation and logistics specialists, engineers, architects and economists are at the forefront of port, shipping, logistics and cargo trends.

We work with a broad spectrum of clients, including public and private owners, as well as tenants of ports and marine terminals. Our range of maritime developments include container, liquid and dry bulk terminals, waterfront developments, cruise and ferry terminals, recreational marinas and military installations.

We focus on applying the right skills at the right time to deliver successful ports and marine projects around the world. Innovation is key when it comes to maritime projects, and we have built our  reputation on incorporating new technologies in ports projects around the world.

Our professionals have also helped plan automated container terminals on five continents, and delivered the world’s first shore-to-ship power system for marine oil tankers. We integrate innovation into our plans, models and designs, delivering projects that serve our clients today and in the future.
