As the Building Information Modelling (BIM) director for Asia Pacific, I am part of our global leadership team executing a comprehensive BIM strategy across geographies. BIM-based project delivery is essential to our work — it enables architects, engineers and clients to see a project “digitally” before it’s built, making it possible to identify issues and solutions early on, as well as improve quality and reliability.
As a civil engineering graduate, technology has always shaped my career. I began as a highway engineer trained in 3D road design and modelling. In the first four years, I completed the design of more than 600 kilometers (372 miles) of complex road and rail projects. This work gave me a strong foundation in approaching design work in 3D, managing varied, intricate scenarios. Although BIM wasn’t well-known at the time, I implemented several core BIM principles into those scenarios and, in doing so, learned how valuable they can be in project delivery. In my current role, I connect people and projects with cutting-edge technologies and coordinate best practices related to those technologies. Some of the clients and projects I’ve supported include the Singapore Land Transport Authority, Circle Line 6, 3RS Hong Kong Airport and the Dholera Investment Region in India for which AECOM introduced several new strategies in BIM implementation, including our collaboration environment: ProjectHub. BIM increases efficiency and productivity, which is why many of our public and private sector clients in Singapore, the United Kingdom and other countries mandate its use. AECOM’s BIM practice is highly regarded and we’ve received several prestigious awards, including the BIM Organization Platinum award from the Singapore Building Construction Authority. I’m motivated to share my knowledge of BIM with my colleagues and the wider industry because I strongly believe BIM requires a collaborative delivery process. It’s important that everyone speaks the same language and understands their responsibilities. BIM is similar to an orchestra where each instrument plays an integral part in creating a symphony. I’m proud to work for a company that is one of the largest global subscribers of BIM technology.
