AECOM awarded US$24 million naval contract as part of the United States Force Posture Initiative in Australia

DARWIN, Australia (June 21, 2018) — AECOM, a premier, fully integrated global infrastructure firm, announced today that it has been selected by the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) to construct an aircraft parking apron and supporting facilities at the Royal Australian Air Force Base Darwin. The firm-fixed priced contract, awarded in May, is worth up to US$24 million and is expected to be completed in 2019.

The contract is the first of many to be delivered under the United States Force Posture Initiative in Australia, in which Australia and the U.S. will be investing more than US$1.5 billion into existing defense infrastructure and facilities in the Northern Territory. This is part of an overall investment package estimated around US$6.12 billion over the next 10 years providing opportunities for sectors including construction, professional services, maintenance and logistics.

“We are honored to continue our partnership with the U.S. Navy, supporting the Force Posture Initiative,” says Vern Kuehn, AECOM’s executive vice president and general manager of its Construction Services’ Federal division. “This project will provide critical defense infrastructure and expand our federal construction portfolio in the Australian market.”

AECOM has extensive experience in the federal sector and has worked in partnership with the U.S. Navy for more than 40 years. For local experience and supply chain connections, AECOM has partnered with Fulton Hogan to deliver this project. It will be the first project built on Australian shores by the U.S. since World War II.

“This win was a collaboration between AECOM Construction Services’ Federal and Australia-New Zealand divisions,” says Nicole Stoddart, AECOM’s managing director of its Australia-New Zealand division of its Construction Services group. “By combining our demonstrated performance in defense construction projects with our Australian industry credibility, we are able to offer a fully integrated and experienced delivery capability that draws on both global and local experience.”

The scope of work includes four additional airfield-rated concrete, paved parking spots with asphalt shoulders; installation of four additional Type III fuel hydrant pits connected to existing fuel lines; and relocation of existing fuel isolation valve pits. Additional work includes the installation of airfield ground lighting, stormwater collection and treatment system, jet blast deflectors and construction of an asphalt access drive.
