AECOM was awarded the FEL-2, EFL-3, and engineering and procurement of a project to retrofit Sunoco’s heaters with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This work was done at the Philadelphia refinery.

The project installed a new SCR to reduce the NOx concentration from the common stack by at least 85 percent. Other aspects of the project included, installing new fans to compensate for the additional pressure drop of the new equipment, replacing sections of ductwork between the heaters and the APH equipment due to the revised equipment configuration, installing a new ammonia vaporizer skid to take liquid ammonia from an existing tank and vaporize it for injection into the catalyst in the SCR, and installing a new CEMS building with analyzers to monitor the stack emissions.
