AECOM assisted the U.S. Department of Defense’s Military Health System in moving its Designated Provider application onto a commercial cloud. This is the first application for the Military Health System in a public cloud with Authority To Operate (ATO). AECOM worked with the DOD to successfully complete the independent DOD Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP) with a Mission Assurance Category (MAC) III Sensitive and receive ATO. We also supported the transition from the legacy environment to the next-generation, cloud-based IT infrastructure. This included the development and execution of a precise and coordinated plan to migrate the systems, networks, applications and data, with minimal downtime to users and stakeholders. Ongoing operations provide 24/7 operational support, monitoring, IT maintenance and resolution of any incidents that may develop.
The application serves nearly 100,000 active duty service members and their families, military retirees and eligible family members enrolled in the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan (USFHP). Highlighted benefits of this project include:
- Implementation of a green, secure cloud environment, including automated surge-on-demand
- Sensitive Authority To Operate (ATO) for public cloud environment
- Precedent and framework for additional DOD agencies to migrate systems to the public cloud
