Since October 2013, a team of AECOM transit and rail specialists located in North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East has been focused on delivering the Riyadh Metro – one of the world’s largest public infrastructure projects.

The US$22.5-billion project will provide six metro lines to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Forming the backbone of the city’s public transportation network, the metro will meet the demands of the growing population while reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

AECOM is supporting a consortium responsible for delivering two of the lines, which will cover 64 kilometers of track and feature 39 stations. Since its involvement began on the project, AECOM has signed five contracts with the Civil Works Joint Venture – part of the BACS Consortium comprising Bechtel, Almabani, Consolidated Contractors Company and Siemens.

Abdol Hagh, AECOM senior vice president, explains the firm’s work on the project: “AECOM is the lead designer responsible for most of the engineering and architecture work on lines 1 and 2. Our team is providing detailed design for the majority of the deep underground stations, elevated stations, viaducts, tunnels and also enabling works/utility diversion.”

Construction began in 2014. The metro is expected to be operational by the end of 2018.
