The Taoyuan International Airport (TIA) was built in 1979. The airside facility aged as time passed, but the operation continued to grow. To meet the future development need, the TIA launched its upgrade programs in 2012 to update all aged navigation system and integrating versatile system to a smart and humane interface of aviation.

This project is to relocate the existing WC taxiway into two parallel new taxiways W1 and W2 of the TIA, thus to provide space to build a third terminal. The scope of work includes new taxiways, taxiway bridge, airport ground lighting system, lower layer of the airport’s southern and northern road to underpass the taxiway bridge, airside service road, circulation loop underpass aside of the TIA zone, underpass aside the Puxing Creek, related demolishment and traffic maintenance work.

The service provided by the JV team of AECOM and CECI full exhibited the profound professional experience, particularly AECOM’s capability in aviation and traffic and the local experience of CECI.

To realize the future blueprint of the TIA, the design included detailed engineering, AGL basic design for turkey tendering and integrated landscape design. The taxiway bridges are new to Taiwan to allow for large passenger aircrafts. The structure and performance safety was carefully considered and designed. The application of BIM in the design process is also a new technology in civil engineering in Taiwan, and is used to build a platform to develop an integrated information system for airport operation and maintenance. And the busy traffic of both airside and landside in the TIA is also an important factor considered in design, interface treatment, construction period and traffic maintenance.

As Taiwan’s most important aviation hub welcome home local residents and visitors, the TIA will need to make beautiful impression to passengers. To ensure the aesthetic appearance, a humble but elegant stealth was adopted in structural engineering and landscape design.
