The City of San Antonio is expanding and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center expansion represents one of the largest jobs the city has undertaken to date. With the need for larger convention and multi-purpose space, the city’s Capital Improvements team turned to AECOM Hunt as part of a joint venture to ensure this historic job for the city was completed successfully.

Overall, the expansion is 726,000 square feet and includes the addition of exhibit halls, multi-purpose rooms, a ballroom, meeting rooms and administrative and support areas. Once complete, the original West Building will be demolished to make room for more green space. Additionally, the expansion will include a cantilever that will extend over Market Street to make the entrance to the facility clear for visitors as well as adding a unique design aspect to the facility.

The most challenging part of the job has been keeping the rest of the facility undisturbed during the renovation phase. A large temporary wall was established to separate in-use space from the worksite. Michael Sawaya is the Director of Convention & Sports Facilities for the city and stated that AECOM Hunt had no negative impact of the facility during the busiest time of year.

Once completed, the convention center will bring in numerous jobs for the city and drive additional business to the area. With the Riverwalk Canal and numerous hotels nearby, existing businesses will benefit from the additional tourism as well.
