AECOM worked with the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to develop a policy framework to guide the integration of light rail transit (LRT) planning with land use activities. In response to economic and population growth, the city is leading an expansion of its LRT system to create a sustainable transportation system that provides mobility choices for residents, employers and visitors.

The success of LRT in providing a viable transportation option to accommodate Edmonton’s rapid growth is dependent on the creation of an integrated transit and land use framework. The Policy Framework aligns various City departments, policies and actions; ensures the city maximizes its public commitment to transit; and encourages the development community to revitalize existing urban areas, reduce land consumption, and reduce automobile dependence. This Framework identifies policy actions to promote pedestrian activity, improve air quality, decrease polluted stormwater runoff, and build more livable, sustainable, communities for people of all income levels.
