AECOM is delivering construction supervision, construction management, and health and safety services for the extension of a section of Slovakia’s longest motorway. The project is being delivered under a long-term programme funded by the country’s Transport Ministry to modernise and extend the D1 motorway, which starts in the capital Bratislava near the border with Austria and, when complete, will extend to the Ukrainian border in the east.

The route forms part of the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), a set of key road, rail, air, and water transport links running throughout Europe. As a result, the D1 construction project is considered very important to Slovakia’s development. The work is also expected to deliver huge cost savings in the long term, as running repairs to the old road have been rising substantially over the past few years.

AECOM’s services cover a 15 kilometre section of the motorway in Northern Slovakia and include a 2 kilometre tunnel, three major interchanges, 21 large bridges and structures, motorway utility connections and diversions, and a motorists’ rest area. The project involves a host of features to construct the new motorway, including noise-reducing measures to create a better environment for local communities, as well as new drainage works.
