AECOM recognized with five awards for environmental industry innovation and leadership

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 20, 2018) — AECOM, a premier, fully integrated global infrastructure firm, announced today that it has earned five prestigious awards from the Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ) and Environmental Business Journal (EBJ), two leading sources of business intelligence in the environmental industry.

CCBJ recognized AECOM with a Project Merit award for climate change adaptation and resilience, and a Consulting and Engineering award for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. EBJ honored AECOM with an Industry Leadership award in coal combustion residuals (CCR) management, a Technology Merit award for monitoring and Project Merit award in remediation.

“I am grateful to CCBJ and EBJ for recognizing our team of industry-leading technical experts’ work in coal combustion residuals management, greenhouse gas mitigation, climate adaptation and resilience, and remediation. These awards clearly demonstrate that our work, conducted in partnership with our clients, is delivering innovative, high-quality and effective solutions that are making a positive impact in our industry and the communities we serve,” said Al Hannum, AECOM’s global environment business chief executive.

This year’s CCBJ award for Project Merit recognized AECOM’s work with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in completing a four-year Partnering for Adaptation and Resilience-Agua (PARA-Agua) program with activities in Peru and Colombia. The program enhances local leaders’ capacity to manage ecosystems and water resources in the face of rising temperatures, drought and flooding. The Consulting and Engineering award for GHG mitigation honored AECOM’s work in helping Kuwait Oil Company evaluate options to reduce emissions through various measures, including carbon capture and storage.

EBJ recognized AECOM for its industry leadership in helping power companies navigate the complex Environmental Protection Agency rules guiding CCR management. Among many accomplishments in this area, AECOM completed a CCR guidance document for clients and has been a valuable team member for many power companies as they determine the best path for compliance and effective management. AECOM provides CCR services to approximately 20 percent of the power industry and has more than 1,000 CCR-focused employees providing services to over 175 impoundments at more than 45 utilities.

AECOM’s EBJ Technology Merit award recognized an innovative solution allowing the unmanned aircraft collection of topography data for the Navajo Housing Authority in a remote area of New Mexico’s Navajo Nation. The technology allows collection of high resolution terrain data in a fraction of the time required by conventional ground or air surveys. AECOM used the data to produce detailed floodplain boundaries to model complex flooding scenarios in the project area to help stakeholders understand the issues and to propose solutions.

AECOM’s EBJ Project Merit award celebrated work performed at the Meriden Green brownfield site in Connecticut. AECOM provided remedial design and construction oversight for the 14-acre site that had long term contamination issues. The team was able to negotiate a reduced cost soil cap solution that saved the city over US$6 million.

The five awards will be presented at the 16th annual Environmental Industry Summit in Coronado, California on March 22. Last year, AECOM was recognized with five EBJ and two CCBJ awards, and has been earning awards from the organizations since 2012 for its exceptional work providing environmental and climate change/adaptation services to industry and the government.
