Programs and Initiatives

With a focus on maintaining safety excellence, AECOM and its employees participate in and lead a number of initiatives that reinforce the importance of safety among our employees, peers and subcontractors.

For example, AECOM’s stop work authority encourages employees to stop all AECOM-directed work if they believe there is an imminent safety, health or environmental risk that will affect them, their co-workers, the public or the environment.

Ensuring that employees have the proper tools and training to safely carry out projects is also key to maintaining a safe culture. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals administers the Safety Trained Supervisor Certification Initiative, and AECOM now has more safety-trained supervisors than many other companies in the world. The certification provides a means for AECOM to instill and verify the safety and health knowledge of first-line supervisors, managers, and other employees with safety responsibilities.

AECOM is also a Campbell Institute Charter Member working alongside top organizations that focus on integrating safety into their business models, as well as a member of the U.S. Occupational Safety Health Administration’s (OSHA) Alliance program where participants are committed to working closely with OSHA to develop and share information with workers and employers to help prevent injuries, illnesses, and fatalities in the workplace.

Voluntary Protection Programs

OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) recognizes employers who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries.

Several of the company’s projects, facilities and offices have garnered and maintained VPP Star status as a result of exceptional safety performance. The most recent achievements include the East Tennessee Technology Park project in Tennessee, United States, as well as the company’s Pueblo chemical agent-destruction pilot plant project in Colorado, United States.

AECOM is a Campbell Institute Charter Member

campbell_instituteGrounded in the belief that safety, health and environmental (SH&E) management is at the core of business vitality and intrinsic to operational success, the Campbell Institute is the SH&E center of excellence at the U.S. National Safety Council.

Following a thorough review of AECOM’s approach to, and superior performance in, SH&E by the Campbell Institute’s partnership and steering committees, AECOM was recognized as a Charter Member among top organizations that focus on integrating safety into their business models. This group of like-minded SH&E leaders serve as the core of the Campbell Institute.

Through events, partnerships, research, as well as the sharing of knowledge and expertise, the Campbell Institute is a transformative force in SH&E leadership and is committed to creating a roadmap for all organizations striving to achieve safety excellence.

Safety is a core value at AECOM, supported by the belief that non-compliance with safety standards creates a poor work environment that not only endangers the lives of employees, contractor employees and members of the public, but also damages a company’s reputation and undermines its financial performance. AECOM’s strong corporate commitment to safety provides a key advantage when pursuing work globally, and the membership helps the company to advance its goal to achieve zero incidents in the workplace.
