When Forest City Ratner Companies decided it was time for Brooklyn to have a one-of-a-kind venue, AECOM Hunt knew the project and its challenges would be an endeavor worth experiencing. The 670,000-square-foot multi-purpose Barclays Center with its 18,000 seats, 105 suites and countless other luxury experiences set a new standard in arena design and construction.
Barclays Center is home to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the NHL’s New York Islanders, and also serves as a premier venue for concerts and other events. Located in the heart of Brooklyn with a subway stop at its front door, the area brings new life to Brooklyn.
The project wasn’t without its challenges to overcome. The exterior façade is comprised of 12,000 pre-rusted weathered steel panels that will allow the facility to slowly shift it’s hue over time. The installation of these was complicated as was the tight jobsite. Also challenging, but perhaps the most eye-catching feature of all, is the oculus — a curved 3,000-foot LED board at the entrance of the facility. Our team of professionals made sure walking into Barclays Center was an experience designed to make an impression.
The arena is set to benefit Brooklyn in the long run, with countless new jobs and more traffic for local businesses. Additionally, the roof of the facility is currently being transformed into a green space. This makes the facility a beautiful site from above, will help dampen sound during events and is even bringing in new wildlife such as honey bees to help pollinate the surrounding area.
