AECOM announced today that it has been awarded a high-profile, 30-month contract by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to study volatile organic compounds (VOC) and photochemical ozone pollution in the Pearl River Delta (PRD).
A VOC is any organic compound which evaporates readily to the atmosphere and is a significant contributor to the production of photochemical smog and certain health problems. Major Pearl River Delta cities like Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have been experiencing increasing photochemical smog since the mid-1990s as a result of rapid economic development – a problem that the Hong Kong EPD has taken very seriously.
According to the EPD, “AECOM will collect VOC samples in various locations within the region, so as to study the spatial distribution of these air pollutants and to carry out grid research and mathematical simulation analysis, through which the formation mechanism of regional photochemical smog could be evaluated. Technically feasible measures for alleviating the regional smog problem will also be examined.”
“This is a challenging study as it involves the simultaneous collection of VOC samples at 100 locations over a 200-kilometer-by-200-kilometer area, and it is the first comprehensive study of its kind,” stated Mike Chan, managing director of AECOM’s ENSR Asia organization. “We are delighted to have been chosen to lead this pioneering study to understand the role of VOC in the formation of photochemical smog and to contribute to making the Pearl River Delta a better place in which to live and work.”
AECOM will be supported by the Environmental Protection Monitoring Center (Guangdong Province), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Peking University, and University of California, Irvine.
Both the Guangdong and Hong Kong governments have been committed to improving air quality in the PRD region and have reaffirmed the determination to achieve the emissions-reduction targets by 2010. Both sides agree that, in order to improve the regional air quality in the long run, continued efforts are required to study regional air pollution issues scientifically and look into appropriate pollution-control strategies.
