In July 2014, following just two and a half years of construction, the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) made its first trial run on the viaduct on the eight-kilometre stretch from Nagole and Mettuguda.

The overall Hyderabad Metro project is being delivered in six stages. Innovative station designs proposed by our team ensured minimum inconvenience to the public during construction. Our energy saving features and innovative ideas for the metro design – such as single piers in the median of the road to support the elevated viaduct and stations – reduced the space required and allowed for wider roads and footpaths. The project won the Best Engineering Project of the Year, 2013 at the Sixth Annual Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum Conference held in New York.

The completed 72-kilometre metro rail will have three elevated corridors of standard gauge track with 64 stations and three depots upon completion in December 2017. It is the world’s largest public-private partnership (PPP) project in the metro sector. It is designed to have a capacity of 50,000 peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) each for corridors I and III and 35,000 PHPDT for corridor II.

AECOM has worked on the preliminary design, preparation of bids and bid evaluation; and is working on the design review, construction supervision (excluding civil), inspection, testing and commissioning of the complete project.
