AECOM announced today that a joint venture in which it participates with Parsons International has been awarded a program management contract by Etihad Rail for the United Arab Emirates’ national railway.

The joint venture team will be responsible for program management during the first phase of the Etihad Rail project and part of the two subsequent phases.
For stage 1 of the Etihad Rail project’s Shah-Habshan-Ruwais route, AECOM will be responsible for the entire project implementation from the preliminary engineering to testing and commissioning, as well as a defect liability period once the project is complete.

Stage 2 comprises the remainder of the Abu Dhabi Emirate network and the connection to Jebel Ali Port.  Stage 3 will involve the remainder of the Northern Emirates network.  AECOM will provide system setup, preliminary engineering, contract formation and awarding EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) or equivalent contracts. In addition to the Preliminary Engineering and EPC contracts, AECOM will also prepare tender documentation and administer, manage and supervise other third party contracts issued by the client.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this contract that will be a central element of the Emirates’ transport infrastructure and will help drive economic growth,” said John M. Dionisio, AECOM president and chief executive officer. “AECOM is committed to creating a world-class, affordable railway through an effective partnership with our client and the combined strength and experience of our transportation professionals.”

When complete, the new national railway will provide freight and passenger service in the United Arab Emirates, stretching across the Emirates, covering a network of approximately 745 miles. The railway will connect the United Arab Emirates to Saudi Arabia via Ghweifat city in the west and Oman via Al Ain in the east. It will be a key link in the development of the United Arab Emirates’ industrial infrastructure and enabler of future growth.

The first stage of the project is scheduled for completion during 2014.
