As one of the largest gold mines in the world, mining giant Kinross’ Tasiast mine in Mauritania produced 219,045 of gold equivalent ounces (6.2 tonnes) last year. The mine operates five open pits.

AECOM has take on many assignments at the mine, including geotechnical investigations and slope stability design of the pit slopes, as well as environmental consultancy. We have also been commissioned to provide geotechnical, hydrogeological and ESIA assistance on Kinross’ new 700-metre-deep West Branch Expansion project.

This major project is designed to increase production. The geotechnical investigations include drilling additional inclined holes and extending some of the existing holes down to about 1,000 metre depths to investigate the deep geology of the mine.
